CHEPA PRESENTATIONS

CHEPA Director Julia Abelson was a key participant in the Strategic Plan Stakeholder Dialogue organized by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. Abelson was one of several presenters at the day-long event held on Jan. 12, 2007 in Toronto. Her topic was What Are Ontarians Saying? The dialogue was part of the ministry’s initiative to develop a 10-year strategic plan for the province’s health care system. The initiative involves engaging a broad range of Ontarians in consultations about the future of health care.

Julia Abelson, Mita Giacomini and members of their research teams presented at the 6th International Conference on Priorities in Health Care held in Toronto, Sept. 20-22, 2006. Abelson presented work from a project called Linking Priority Setting to Policy Decisions: A Report on two Innovative Deliberative Public Participation Experiences in Quebec. Giacomini presented from two studies: Values and Health Technology Evaluation: A Study of Ontario Health Services Appeal Board Decisions and What Counts as “Evidence” about a Technology? A Qualitative Analysis of Arguments and Decisions in Appeal Board Cases.


CHEPA researchers took part in the Canadian Association for Health Services and Policy Research meeting in Vancouver Sept. 17-19, 2006. Results were presented from a study called Privacy and health research: What are the attitudes of the public? The study was led by former CHEPA associate Don Willison. CHEPA members Julia Abelson and Cathy Charles are co-investigators. Also presented were findings from a joint McMaster-Dalhousie University research initiative entitled Ethical Frameworks for Health Policy: Apprisal, Appraisal and Applications. That project is being led by CHEPA member Mita Giacomini and Nuala Kenny.

Several CHEPA members were key participants in the Better Analysis For Better Decisions conference held at McMaster University June 19-20, 2006. CHEPA member Greg Stoddart was one of two main organizers of the event, which was in honour of the memory of Bernie O’Brien. CHEPA members Stephen Birch and Amiram Gafni presented on the project called Information created to evade reality (ICER): Things we shouldn’t look to for answers. CHEPA’s Ron Goeree was involved in a presentation entitled Economic evaluation with the Canadian Common Drug Review. George Torrance, emeritus member of CHEPA, gave a talk called Utility measurement in health care: The things I never got to.
